Saradha scam: Mamata cites Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar's example!

Kolkata, Sept 13: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is increasingly feeling the heat of the Saradha scam worth millions, raised the names of cricketers like Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar to defend her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), over its alleged connection with the chit fund scam, according to an ABP Ananda report.

Speaking to a news channel, Banerjee, who has been accused by her party's suspended MP Kunal Ghosh of bagging the maximum benefit from the scam, said a firm like Sahara has also been found guilty of financial irregularities but that doesn't mean Ganguly or Tendulkar who played for teams sponsored by the firm is also guilty.

Sahara has sponsored sports like cricket and football and players like Tendulkar and Ganguly have played in teams sponsored by the firm. "Can they be held guilty," the chief minister asked.

The Opposition mocked the chief minister's defence, saying the leader was panicky and hence trying to put up any defence for its sake.

Banerjee also accused the Left front, Congress and BJP of trying to malign her party's image. She said it was her government who had nabbed the thief and ordered probe but now we are being dubbed as the thief. She said the TMC is the most transparent party in the country.
