Rape remark: TMC candidate may face imprisonment

Kolkata, March 28: Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from Ghatal in West Midnapore district of West Bengal may land in trouble over his controversial remark made during a recent interview. The Election Commission has sought a CD from the Bengali newspaper to which the actor-politician had given the interview earlier this week. Dev has been accused of making irresponsible remark on a sensitive issue like rape and if the charges are proved, he could be handed over three years of imprisonment and fine.

Dev told in his interview that too much of media focus on his candidature was making him feel like being raped. He also said one either enjoys rape or shouts against it [Read here], stirring up a huge controversy in the state and national media. The women's organisation of the CPI(M) lodged a complaint with the EC and sought to take steps against him. Dev later apologised on Twitter, reporteldy after being told to do so by party supremo Mamata Banerjee [Read here].

Other leaders like TMC's Anubrata Mandal and CPI(M)'s Anisur Rahman may also face the music for uttering objectionable words against the opponent parties.
