Kolkata, June 17: He made the headlines recently after coming to the rescue of a higher secondary school in a remote village in West Bengal by providing Rs 76 lakh from his MPLAD funds.
Former Indian cricket captain and currently a Rajya Sabha---MP Sachin Tendulkar stole the headlines yet again within a few days, this time by sanctioning Rs 20 lakh for a school hostel in the same West Midnapore district of Bengal, according to a report published in Ananda Bazaar Patrika (ABP) on Friday (June 17). The report said Tendulkar has donated Rs 20 lakh for constructing the hostel for tribal students of a school in Gopiballabhpur-1 block in the same district.
The money though hasn't reached the school authorities yet, but Tendulkar's sources have informed the district magistrate about the sanction and the local administration has sought appointment of a contractor for the work, said the report.
Last year, the authorities of a school in Narayangarh received over Rs 76 lakh for setting up a new building after the head master of the school wrote to the Master Blaster after failing to get help from various quarters.
Like the head master of the Narayangarh school, it is also the head master of the Gopiballabhpur school, Tarun Kumar Chakraborty, who took the initiative, said the report. He said the proof that Tendulkar never disappoints anybody who approaches him for help in education. Chakraborty then wrote to the MP in November last year.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the local MLA had also helped the school in the past, said the ABP report. It only lacked a hostel but Tendulkar also solved that problem.
