Mamata orders admission of nephew's attacker in special hospital cabin
Kolkata, Jan 9: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asked officials to admit Debashis Acharya, the man who was badly beaten up for slapping her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in a public rally last week, in a cabin in the SSKM Hospital here.
On Wednesday, Banerjee asked her nephew, who is also an MP from the state, to meet Acharya's parents who sought to apologise for his act. The order to get the injured student in the hospital came soon after the MP met his parents.
Acharya went to the stage when Abhishek was speaking in a rally in Tamluk town of East Midnapore and slapped him. He was badly beaten up Trinamool Congress supporters present on the occasion. A case under Sections 120B, 307, 323, 343, 447 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him.
The chief minister reportedly learned that Acharya's parents wanted to get their son treated in the SSKM Hospital and soon asked the health officials to look into the matter. It was first decided that Debashis would be admitted in a special cabin so that the access to him could be restricted. Hospital authorities felt the move was to keep the media away from the injured student.
