Hindu hardliner Kalyan Singh to become West Bengal governor?

Kolkata, July 5: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh is likely to become the next governor of West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has decided to appoint Singh as the successor to MK Narayanan, who recently quit from the post. If everything goes as par the plan, Singh may assume office in this week itself.

The news about Singh's appointment as the next governor of Bengal has created quite a stir in the state's political circles. Singh, known to be close to the Sangh Parivar and a Hindu hardliner, is being sent by the Centre to keep a pressure on the Mamata Banerjee government in the state, feel political observers.

The chief minister herself has also reportedly said that she is ready to take up the new challenge but warned that a clash between the chief minister and the governor would not augur well for the state for it would lead to all sorts of administrative crisis.

Singh, who returned to the BJP during one of Modi's pre-poll rallies in UP earlier this year, was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh during the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in December 1992.
