Kolkata, Jan 5: The 25-year-old B Tech student from an institute in Durgapur who slapped West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew at a rally in Tamluk town of East Midnapore district on Sunday, said after the incident that he was the soul of Khudiram Bose, the revolutionary from Bengal who was martyred at the age of 18 for trying to kill an English judge. "Ami Khudiram er atma. Abaar janmo nebo. Chollam, Bharatbasi (I'm Khudiram's spirit. I shall be born again. Goodbye, Indians)," the student was quoted as saying in The Telegraph. He said this while being taken to the hospital. [Minister justifies merciless thrashing of the attacker]
The TMC staged rallies across the state to protest the slap
While state minister Subrata Mukherjee said in a press conference on Monday that such a reaction was natural, the party's Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien condemned the attack, saying it was hardly a slap but would do little to unnerve the young MP.
Debashis's family sources later said that he is a man of whimsical nature and that he had gave up studying a few months ago and left for Haridwar, an India Today report said.
"I think he has fallen into bad company and that's why ended up committing such a crime," the father was quoted as saying in The Telegraph.
