The hospital, the largest in the region for childrens' referral has been grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons. Hospital authoritites say that 49 child patients have died in the past seven days and almost all of them were brought in critical condition.
Even as the deaths sparked outrage amongst the local people, the hospital authorities denied any negligence on their part. Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya said: "During this season, children suffer from a lot and most of them are brought here. Situation is nothing abnormal," she said.
She also added that inspite of this, the hospital has strenghtened its medical team, nursing staff and infrastructure.
Chairman of the task force formed Tridib Baneerjee said that the health department has been struggling to take the best of child health care. "We are making sure that not a sinlge infant dies for want of proper health care and treatment," he added.
The hospital was in news when it reported the death of 18 children within 48 hours on July 1, 2011.
