BJP candidate's lead in minority-dominated assembly segment in Bengal surprises many
The MLA from this segment, Abdul Karim Chowdhury is a state minister and an influential minority leader in these parts and the lead of a right-wing candidate in his den has surprised many. According to political observers, the polarisation of the minority votes between the Left, Congress and Trinamool Congress and the BJP's bagging the majority votes have led to such a scenario.
The minority votes got polarised while the majority ones went to BJP
Traditionally, the minority votes in Islampur either went to the Congress or the Left and since the 2011 assembly elections, the TMC made inroads into that vote-bank. Now, with the rise of the BJP by capitalising on the majority votes, the ruling party in the state will not be in a very happy state of mind. Chowdhury although feels that the current trend is a temporary affair, he will not be very assured ahead of the next assembly election in West Bengal.
