Kolkata, April 21: Anwar Khan, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) of Kashipur-Belgachhia constituency who was kept under watch by the Election Commission (EC), was seen openly challenging the panel during polling on Thursday (April 21).
While Swapan Chakraborti, the other local TMC leader who was also kept under watch by the EC, stayed indoors, Khan was seen instructing someone over the phone to conduct the election in their own way. [1 killed in poll violence in Domkol in Murshidabad]
"To hell with the EC. Hit it on its face with a shoe. You bring out the voters of Kashipur from their homes. The EC will be humiliated if the voter turnout in Kashipur-Belgachhia is high," Khan said.
He also expressed his frustration over the fact that he was kept under vigilance.
The constituency saw trouble brewing from the eve of the election. CPI(M) candidate from this seat Kaninika Ghosh (Basu) also alleged that ruling party cadres were creating problem for the Opposition.
She lost to TMC's Mala Saha by 40,284 votes in 2011.
TMC accused of muscle-flexing in Entally
The ruling TMC was also accused of chasing away Left's polling agents from various booths in Entally constituency in Kolkata. CPI(M) candidate Debesh Das couldn't succeed in making his party's agents enter the booths. He was also seen being abused by supporters of the TMC.
His TMC opponent and sitting MLA Swarnakamal Saha, however, refuted the charges and said the election was being held peacefully. He also told his opponent after they met at a polling booth that if any supporter of the TMC is obstructing the Opposition, he would personally look into the matter and take steps.
