Another West Bengal candidate makes rape remark, EC seeks reply

Kolkata, March 30: After Trinamool Congress's (TMC) Dev, it is turn for BJP candidate from West Bengal P C Sorcar Junior, a magician by profession, to court controversy by using unparliamentary language.

Sorcar, who is contesting from Barasat constituency in North 24 Parganas, allegedly attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and his woman opponent from the TMC, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, during a poll campaign on Saturday. Speaking about the growing crime against women in the state, Sorcar said those in power call the rapists just "dushtu chhele" (naughty boys) but what would be their opinion if they themselves are raped. Dastidar had targetted a rape victim in Kolkata for her plight a few years ago.

What if those shielding the rapists are raped themselves, Sorcar asked

Sorcar also called Dastidar an insane woman. He said the latter had little understanding of men despite being a gynaecologist. He said being a psychologist, he knows how to cure people and could cure Dastidar.

Dastidar moved the Election Commission against her opponent for allegedly violating the model code of conduct and the district electoral officer said a notice had been sent to Sorcar was waiting for his reply.
