Jammu, Dec 23: The Election Commission of India (EC) has said that the new legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir has to be formed on or before December 29 while the term of the current assembly ends on January 17. [Why elections take place in only 87 constituencies in J&K]
According to a report published in the Daily Excelsior, sources in the EC said that the 12th assembly will be formed on or before December 29, the deadline for completion of election process in the state that started on November 25 and concluded on December 20.
The district electoral officers will submit the list of winners of the assembly segments falling under their jurisdiction to the chief electoral officer of Jammu and Kashmir. The CEO will submit those names to the EC.
The poll panel will formally issue a notification announcing setting up of the 12th legislative assembly on or before December 29, the report added.
Jammu and Kashmir was set to see a hung parliament with none of the parties in a position to achieve majority in the 87-member assembly. While the People's Democratic Party was leading in 28 seats, the BJP was ahead in 25 seats. The National Conference and Congress were leading in 15 and 12 seats, respectively.
