Saudi Arabia has launched military operations in Yemen on Wednesday, as part of a coalition of over ten countries in response to a direct request from the legitimate government of Yemen. As the country, ridden with extremist groups, edges closer to civil war.

Who are Houthi rebels?

*Forces allied to Zaidi Shia rebels known as Houthis.

*They demand more rights for the Yemen's Zyadi Shia Muslims.

*They seized capital city Sana'a in September and advanced into central and western parts of the country where Sunni Muslims predominate.

*Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has been opponent to both President Hadi and Houthis.

*The Yemen crisis started when Houthis took control of capital Sanna in September 2014.

*They took control over capital city after four days of fighting with soldiers loyal to the government.

*It's aimed at stopping the advance of Shia Houthi militants who control the capital Sanaa, and the coastal city of Aden.

Houthis captured presidential palace

*Yemen's Shia Houthi rebels seized the presidential palace in January after it signed a ceasefire deal with the Yemeni government.

*Shia Houthi gunmen entered the palace along with members of the presidential committee that monitors the ceasefire.

*Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi flee to Aden.

*He described takeover of Sanaa as a "coup".

Sanaa mosques attack

*On March 20, Yemen went through violent attacks at the hands of terrorists linked to the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).

*The attack on the mosques during Friday prayers led to the deaths of 137 people, mostly worshipers.

*The responsibility was claimed by ISIS.

*These mosques were frequented by Shiite rebels.

*On 21 March, the US withdrew all its forces from Yemen, citing the deteriorating security situation as the reason.

*Indians in Yemen were also advised to take the first commercial flight out of the country.

President Hadi flee

*Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi left his refuge in Aden for Saudi Arabia on Thursday as Houthi rebels battled with his forces on the outskirts of the southern port city.

*Oil prices have surged after Saudi Arabian jets struck rebel targets in Yemen.

*It sparks fears that an escalating crisis in the country could threaten crude producers in the Middle East.
