Powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Mexico: USGS

Mexico City, July 7: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude at the Richter scale rattled Gautemala in southern Mexico and Central America on Monday.

According to the US Geological Survey report, the epicenter is said to be 8 kms north east of Puerto Madero in Mexico.

The quake striked off at 6:23 am local (7:23 am EDT and 11.23 GMT) on the Pacific Ocean.

The USGS further reported that the severe shaking was felt by the residents of Chiapas and Tabasco, that erupted 57 miles (92.2 kilometres) beneath the earth surface.

There has been no immediate report of any human casualty or major loss of property but power outages were reported from the western part of Guatemala.

However, ABC News reported that at least two died in Gautemala due to earthquake.

Further details are awaited.

In April this year, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale had hit the southern part of Mexico.
