PM Modi also visited the ancient city of Anuradhapura, located about 206 kilometres from capital Colombo, where he offered prayers at the sacred Mahabodhi tree. He was received at Anuradhapura helipad by dignitaries and given a Guard of Honour.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera was also present at the rituals along with the Indian prime minister. Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, who assumed office in January, also accompanied Modi.
