Karachi, June 22: Amjad Sabri,well-known qawwal of Pakistan was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in port city of Karachi on Wednesday.
He was shot in the head in a targeted attack by motorcycle borne assailants in Karachi's Liaquatabad area when he was travelling in a car with his associate.
Sabri received three bullet injuries, reported the Dawn citing police sources said. The two were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed hospital, where Sabri succumbed to his injuries. His associate also died.
Sabri one of the most sought-after qawwals in Pakistan known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry.
Amjad Sabri was the son of renowned Qawwal Ghulam Farid Sabri whose family is famous in the subcontinent for their contribution to this sufi art and mystic poetry.
Sabri was one of Pakistan's finest qawwals, known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry. Some of the most memorable and famous qawwalis of the Sabris were 'Bhar Do Jholi Meri', 'Tajdar-i-Haram' and 'Mera Koi Nahin Hai Teray Siwa'. Sabri, who travelled widely to Europe and USA for his concerts, was known as the "rockstar" of Qawali due to his modern style of rendition.
Alia Bhatt, Ayushmann Khurrana, Amit Trivedi, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar are among the celebrities from India and Pakistan to pay tribute to renowned qawwal Amjad Sabri, who was shot dead.
