Pakistan: 140 killed, 100 injured after oil tanker catches fire
At least 140 people were killed when an oil tanker exploded after it overturned in Pakistan's Punjab province on Sunday morning, police said.
Over 100 others were injured. They were moved to Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital and other health facilities. The toll may increase as many of the injured are said to be in critical condition, the police added.
People had gathered around the tanker after it overturned to collect oil that had leaked out, according to Radio Pakistan.
The fire brigade arrived on the site of the incident shortly after the blaze started and rescue operations were initiated.
The Punjab government said three helicopters are shifting the critically burnt people to Multan’s combined military hospital and Nishter Hospital for providing better health facilities.
Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa ordered the Army to assist the civil administration in the rescue effort. Army helicopters have been deployed in the rescue operations. The tragedy came a day ahead of Eid ul-Fitr celebrations in the country, marking the end of the holy fasting month of Ramazan.
