Nobel peace prize 2016 witnesses record nominations

London, Mar 2: Nobel peace prize 2016 has witnessed a record nominations. This year a total 376 people have been nominated for the coveted prize.

The prominent names that have been emerged in nominations are US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Pope Francis and residents of Greek islands helping refugees.

Out of total 376, 228 are individuals and 148 are organizations, said a statement issued by the

"376 is by far the highest number of candidates ever. The previous record, 278 candidates, was set in 2014. Greek islanders to be nominated for Nobel peace prize," it added.

The five-member Nobel Committee which selects the winner held its first meeting on Monday, during which members were able to nominate candidates of their own choice.

The name or names of the laureate there can be a maximum of three will be announced on 7 October.

Nobel Peace Prize, 2015 was given to Tunisian groups that rescued the country's transition to democracy.
