MH 370: Oil slick spotted in search area
Angus Houston, who fronts the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, said,"I stress the source of the oil is yet to be determined but the oil slick is approximately 5,500 metres downwind... from the vicinity of the detections picked up by the towed pinger locator on Ocean Shield."
Although confident that the oil slick is not that of a search vessel, it would take some time before it could be conclusively tested.
Currently, the US-made Bluefin-21, a 750 Kg sonar device will be deployed under water. This 4.93-metre long device can operate at a depth of 4,500 metres, approximately the depth of the ocean floor from where the pings were detected.
