The public was even barred from the National Museum of Catalan Art so that the main ceremony could take place.
Jordi Marti, a leader of the Socialist party in Barcelona, accused the city council of "being fascinated by the smell of money". "Putting the city's public spaces at the service of private interests is simply unacceptable," he said.
Xavier Trias, Barcelona's mayor who had attended the wedding, defended his decision to host the big fat Indian extravaganza in the city to attract "economic activity" during a recession and to boost the city's profile.
There were 200 butlers, cooks and secretaries who were flown in specially for the occasion from India and Thailand.
