Flag not flown half-mast at White House for APJ Abdul Kalam: Report

Washington, July 30: US President Barack Obama did not call for flag at the White House to be lowered to half-mast to honor former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam, media reported.

Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and even Whatsapp have been flooded with claims that US President Barack Obama ordered the US flag on White House to be hoisted at half-staff, media reported.

Several images showing the US flag at half-staff with a caption "First Time in World History U.S White House Flag was Half Down on behalf of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Sir.." are doing the rounds on social media.

The United States ordered flag flown at half-staff until sunset on July 25, 2015 to honour the victims of the tragedy in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Former President Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam passed away in Shillong on July 27. Popularly known as the Missile Man of India, Kalam was largely seen as a people's President as he would interact with citizens closely.

He served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.
