First step to expanded fight: US carries out air strikes on IS militants
The United States forces will aid the Iraqi security forces near Baghdad who were being attacked by enemy fighters.
The Central Command informed that they conducted two airstrikes on Sunday and Monday in support of the Iraqi forces near Sinjar and southwest of Baghdad. These strikes destroyed six Islamic State vehicles and one of the group's fighting positions that was firing on the Iraqi security forces.
The strikes were a part of the new mission authorised by US President Barack Obama to go on the offensive against the Islamic State group.
US officials stated that the Iraqi forces requested assistance when they came under fire from militants.
