Graft effect: Interpol suspends partnership with Fifa to combat fixing

Lyon (France), June 13: International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) on Friday suspended a joint match-fixing programme with football's international governing body Fifa over allegations of corruption against the latter.

The agency also froze 20 million euros that were donated by Fifa in 2011 for the programme.

The 10-year Integrity in Sport agreement was aimed at checking match-fixing and illegal gambling.
Football's international governing body is under investigation by American and Swiss authorities for alleged bribery and corruption.

Even Fifa president Sepp Blatter resgined soon after getting elected as the president for the fifth time though he will continue to stay in the position till his successor is found.

Interpol Secretary General Juergen Stock confirmed the news, saying the Interpol made the move in the light of the current controversy surrounding Fifa.

The Fifa-Interpol agreement said that football must be "compatible with the principles, aims and activities of Interpol".
