China moved troops, heavy equipment to Tibet amidst standoff with India
None of the reports said that the transfer of equipment was to support military drills in Tibet.
There are reports stating that China moved thousand of tonnes of military equipment including army vehicles to Tibet in June. This incidentally coincides with the standoff with India.
The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said, quoting the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily that the haul was transported to a region south of the Kunlun mountains in northern Tibet by the western theatre command, which oversees the restive regions of Xinjiang, Tibet and also handles border issues with India.
Ni Lexiong, a Shanghai-based military commentator, told the South China Morning Post that the transfer of equipment may have been related to the standoff. It could have been designed to bring India to the negotiating table, he also said. He also said that diplomatic talks should be backed by military preparation.
While none of the reports said that the transfer of equipment was to support military drills in Tibet, the PLA said that the hardware was moved late in June.
