Vatican, Sept 25: Former Vatican ambassador Józef Wesołowski was on Thursday put under house arrest over charges of child sex abuse allegations, after diplomatic immunity was withdrawn.

According to The Independent report, the high-rank holder, 66-year old Polish-born cleric could face up to "12 years in prison if convicted".

The Dominican Republic, will now investigate the case of Wesołowski, sexually abusing the teenage boys, the rumuours of which came to light last year in August.

"On the basis of medical grounds, Wesołowski has been put under house arrest rather than being detained in prison", the Holy See confirmed on Wednesday night.

A preliminary hearing into the case has been initiated, by the Vatican City State's separate criminal court.

The report further said that the Prosecutors alleged that Wesołowski had paid teenage boys as young as 13 to masturbate.

Earlier, the Pope Francis had described paedophilia as an "ugly crime", likening it to a "satanic mass".
