Brussels, March 22: A fresh explosion was heard near the Maelbeek metro station in central Brussels close to the European Union institutions, says a Belgian broadcaster. The explosion at the metro station reportedly killed 10 people.
Another blast was heard at Schuman metro station as well.
The metro stations were shut down as a result of explosion. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he was monitoring the situation minute by minute.
The Maelbeek metro station is located near the Gare de Bruxelles-Schuman railway station. Smoke was seen coming out of the metro station.
The metro station is also near a number of important EU buidlings like the Belaymont building, which houses the EU Commission and the Council of the European Union.
The authorties said the security alert after the blasts at the airport and the metro station.
