Assad hails Russia as "natural superpower"
Moreover, the Russian army has also stepped into the Syrian conflict, backing the Syrian army with air power and logistic support.
Damascus, Nov 22 Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hailed the Russian stance on fighting terror in Syria on Tuesday, saying such a stance proves Moscow's "natural status" as a superpower.
"The Russian policies, whether at the international level or the war on terror in Syria, prove Moscow's natural status as a superpower based on its principles, values and adherence to the international law," Xinhua news agency quoted Assad as saying during his meeting with the Russian delegation in Damascus.
The president further underlined the importance of Russian support to Syria at all levels, particularly economically as it contributed to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people, who have been reeling under economic sanctions for years.
Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian delegation to Syria Dmitry Rogozin said the main goal behind the military, economic and political support provided to Damascus is to reinforce the Syrian people in the face of terrorism.
Russia has been a staunch ally of the Assad administration, shielding the Syrian government in the UN Security Council against many punitive resolutions adopted by the Western powers.
Moreover, the Russian army has also stepped into the Syrian conflict, backing the Syrian army with air power and logistic support.
