The incident was reported from Ghor province of the country on Monday where a judge lashed man and woman. The entire incident was filmed by crowd watching the lashing.
In the footage, a woman can be seen wrapped in a head-to-toe burqa and a man each receive the punishment from a man in a turban wielding a leather whip, watched by a group of mostly seated men.
Public lashings and executions were common practice under the Taliban from 1996-2001. The Islamist militant group was ousted from power by a US led coalition.
Both man and woman, whose sentencing was backed by provincial government, stayed in crouching position throughout and did not appear to cry out.
According to judge, the punishment meted to the couple was in line with the constitution and criminal law. A spokesman for the justice ministry was unavailable for comment.
