The people inside the container, including men, women and children, were believed to be from the Indian subcontinent and were discovered inside the container on a ship that arrived from Zeebrugge port in Belgium.
The survivors were taken to nearby hospitals where two were found to be in a serious condition. The others were suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.

The local police were hunting for those involved in putting the people in the container. It was also said that the authorities should understand reasons for people putting their lives in risk to reach Britain. Illegal immigration to Britain, often in dangerous circulmstances, is not rare.
The police were also searching the other containers to find if anybody was hiding in them as well. A total of 64 containers arrived aboard the P and O ship on Saturday.According to the UK Border Force, over 11,000 attempts to cross the English Channel were prevented in the year 2012-13.

- In 2000, 58 Chinese illegal immigrants died of suffocation after the air vent to their sealed container on a truck was closed while they were on way to Dover port in southern England.
- In July 2013, British police arrested two persons after 15 people were found hidden in a tanker on board a ferry at Dover.
- In June 2014, eight illegal immigrants from Afghanistan were rescued from the English Channel after their small boat landed in trouble.
- Earlier in August 2014, 16 men, all believed to be from Ethiopia, were found inside a refrigerator in a truck outside London. All were arrested.
