Controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik had planned another donation to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust.
New Delhi, Nov 25: Controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik had planned another donation to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. While one donation of Rs 50 lakh had been made in 2011, he had planned on donating another Rs 25 lakh to the Rajiv Trust.
The Rs 50 lakh donation was returned by the Trust in July this year after the controversy regarding Naik broke out.
Investigations have found that the amount of Rs 25 lakh which was to be routed through a hospital never reached the trust.

The National Investigation Agency which is probing the case against Naik and his NGO, the Islamic Research Foundation conducted raids at several places after registering a case. During the search several documents were unearthed.
One of the documents showed that the Rajiv Trust was to receive another donation of Rs 25 lakh. This amount however never reached the trust. Investigators say that the amount was to be transferred to the trust in November 2011.
The amount was to be routed through a hospital in Mumbai, but the transfer never happened. The IRF had told the hospital to transfer the amount. However the hospital utilised the amount for hospital expenditure.

Amount refunded:
While the Rajiv Trust had received an amount of Rs 50 lakh towards donation, it however decided to refund the same after the controversy broke out. A decision to refund the donation of Rs 50 lakh was taken in July in a meeting that was chaired by Sonia Gandhi.
The RGCT established in 2002 addresses needs of people in the rural areas.The donation, an unsolicited one, was deposited directly in the trust by cheque in 2011.
The donation was followed by the IRF which had written to the trust that the money was to be used for its general fund. The PAN card details were also enclosed. In the report it isalso stated that the trust took an informal decision that it will not have any engagement with the Islamic Research Foundation.
Zakir Naik has been in the eye of the storm after the Dhaka attack. Bangladesh had sought action against Naik after it was found that one of the attackers was inspired by Naik's preachings. India has launched an independent probe into Naik's speeches and also the flow of funds.
