New Delhi, Oct 1: Youth Congress will launch 'Gandhi Sandesh Yatra' across the country on Friday to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at a time when Congress is accusing the NDA government of trying to "usurp" the national icons of the party.

"The Gandhi Sandesh Yatra (foot march) is being organised by Youth Congress in observance of the 'satyagraha' call given by Mahatma Gandhi consisting of 11 pledges taken in the spirit of humility to practice virtues of non violence, truth, non stealing, celibacy, equal respect for all religions, swadeshi and freedom from untouchability," the IYC said in a statement.

In the national capital, the Yatra will begin tomorrow afternoon from Raisina Road and conclude at Gandhi Smriti, Rajghat, covering a distance of 5 kms.

The programme has been finalised on a day when a poster put up by BJP leader Vijay Goel at his residence compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mahatma Gandhi.

Modi's invoking Mahatma Gandhi's name to launch his 'swacch bharat' campaign earlier was seen in Congress as an attempt by the NDA to usurp the legacy of Gandhi and "dilute" his persona.

Youth Congress national media coordinator Amrish Ranjan Pandey said that it will be for the first time that those who cannot participate in the padyatra can do so through a Mobile App.

"People can contribute by dedicating their footsteps to 'Gandhi Sandesh Yatra' that will be recorded through Just Move mobile application specially designed to do so," Pandey said.

In order to inculcate habit of regular walk for good health among the party cadre, the program will continue till Ocotober 15, which implies that all those who have enrolled for Gandhi Sandesh Yatra should walk at least 3 ms (approximately 4,000 footsteps) ever day.

"The steps one takes in next 14 days will be tracked through Just Move Mobile Application. There will be Special Citation given to individuals who walks 3 kms or more per day," he said. The target is that every one walks up more every day, 42 kms in 14 days.
