According to the police, 25-year-old Bapi Pal from Janakinagar village, was arrested last night after a Trinamool Congress supporter filed a complaint at Harishchandrapur police station. Pal was produced before a local court today which remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.
Although it is not clear as to what the content of the post was, the man's father told media it was wrong in his son's part to make remarks against Mamata Banerjee.
The man was earlier part of Civic Police Volunteer Force which was introduced by the Kolkata civic body in 2008 to assist Kolkata Police in traffic management.
This is not the first time Mamata has acted against civilians who made remarks against her. A Jadavpur University professor was arrested in April 2012, for posting a cartoon on Facebook featuring Banerjee with the then Railway Minister Mukul Roy and his predecessor Dinesh Trivedi. The cartoon showed Mamata and the railway minister exchanging dialogues from popular Bengali film Sonar Kella, a detective thriller by Satyajit Ray.
The professor was arrested and the incident had triggered strong reaction from opposition CPI-M and public which called the action as "atrocious" and an assault on the fundamental right of freedom of expression and a reminder of the Emergency era.
