The Indian Express quoted a jail official as saying, "He didn't appear shaky at all, he was not trembling. He seemed to be quite composed and ready to spend the last few minutes of his life in a dignified manner."

While speaking about Yakub's last words, the official quoted the 1993 blasts convict as saying, "Main aur mera rab hi janta hai ki asliyat kya hai. Aap log toh duty kar rahe hain isliye main aapko maaf karta hoon (I and my God know the truth. You people are just doing your duty, so I forgive you)."

Yakub's execution ignited a controversy in the country. Many raised questions against capital punishment. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was one among them who strongly opposed the death penalty.

Demanding to erase death penalty in the country, the Congress MP was quoted as saying, "Terrorists should be put behind bars throughout their life without parole. In earlier days, there was a belief that if a person murders someone, he should be killed. Why do we need to follow the old obsolete practice."
