Bengaluru, June 5: On the occasion of the World Environment Day, celebrated across the globe on June 5 (Sunday), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a special message for his countrymen. Modi tweeted, "On #WorldEnvironmentDay, a commitment to protect our environment & live in harmony with nature."
The message was accompanied by a picture where the Prime Minister was seen planting a sapling.
The message on the micro-blogging site was simple, but holds great importance for a country like India which has been one of the worst victims of environmental vagaries.
Every year, June 5 is celebrated as the World Environment Day to raise global awareness to protect the nature and the planet Earth.
It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This year, the World Environment Day, is themed around the rising illegal trade in wildlife, under the slogan 'Go Wild for Life'.
Along with Modi, several other politicians and celebrities tweeted on the occasion to raise awareness about critical environmental issues.

#WorldEnvironmentDay.Do your best - plant a tree,conserve water,save electricity,use public transport," tweeted Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior BJP leader from Assam, who also holds several important portfolios in the newly-formed BJP government in the state.
"Planted a sapling this morning on world environment day. Urge you all to do the same. Stay green! #WorldEnvironmentDay," tweeted senior television journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.
"We have planned to plant around 20000 plants in our constituency during this rainy season in my constituency.
#WorldEnvironmentDay," tweeted Krishna Byre Gowda, minister of agriculture, Karnataka.
"The urban society has a lot to learn from tribals who have protected the environment for ages.
