Kerala, Oct 21:A woman was set on fire in a halted Kannur-Alappuzha Executive Express train in Kannur on Monday morning. She succumbed to her burns at 8:30 am today at the Government medical college. Identified as 45-year old Pathutti alias Khadeeja, she is a resident of Malappuram. She was first rushed to a government hospital and from there to the Kozhikode hospital.

The incident took place in the 13th compartment of the train, which had arrived half an hour prior to the scheduled time of departure. Eyewitnesses saw an unidentified person fleeing from the compartment, crossing the tracks towards the eastern entry of the railway station. Police said that the man had some heated arguments with the woman, before he poured liquid on her and set her ablaze.

It was dark inside the train as the lights were not switched on as the woman had boarded the train immediately after it arrived at platform number 1. Eyewitnesses say that they saw a woman running out of the compartment with her clothes on fire.
