Police engages in encounter with GNLF
Garo Hills, June 5: In an incident that shocked the nation, a militant group shot a woman through her head in front of her children, for resisting their attempt to molest her in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district on Tuesday evening.

The police forces are engaged in an encounter with the Garo National Liberation Front (GNLF) who was involved in the act.

GNLF is fighting for a separate Garoland

"We have identified the group. Now heavy exchange of fire is taking place between this group and the police in the Durama jungles. it started around 7.30 and is going on right now," said GHP Raju, IG Operations, Meghalaya Police, told media.

The security forces launched a crackdown on a militant hideout, an official said. There were no reports yet if anyone was arrested or killed in the crackdown in Adugre area, about 370 km from here.

"The gun battle is on as rebels are continuing with their firing. The Special Weapons and Tactics team and Combat Battalion for Resolute Action commandos are retaliating," Davies N.R. Marak, the district police chief, told IANS.

The GNLF shot the 35-year-old woman six times through the head at point blank range with an automatic assault rifle and has accepted responsibility for the same.

In an e-mail sent to local journalists, the outfit has claimed that the woman was a police informer and was responsible for giving information to the cops about some high profile members of their organisation.

The GNLF, one of the five Garo tribal rebel groups, is fighting for a separate Garoland to be carved out of Meghalaya.
