Instigation by parents or relatives leads to triple talaq: Survey
The Supreme Court on Tuesday banned the practice of triple talaq, or instant divorce, practised by some in the Muslim community, saying it was unconstitutional. The court in a 3:2 verdict struck down talaq-e-biddat and directed the centre to come up with a law to govern Muslim marriages and divorces.

According to the survey by Delhi-based Centre for Research and Debates in Development Policy, the top reasons behind Muslim men opting for triple talaq (divorce) are:
- 13.27% instigated by parents/relatives
- 8.41% did not meet their dowry demands
- 7.96 % husband having extra marital affair
- 7.08% Because women could not become pregnant
- 4.42% sexual incompatibility
- 3.54% husband does not like the wife
- 0.44% spur of the moment temper
- 0.88% Husband pronounced talaq under the influence of alcohol
- 37.61% other reasons
