West Bengal: Lionel Messi’s Kolkata match ‘sponsored’ by Saradha scam accused

Kolkata, Nov 11: In an another important development in the multi-crore Saradha scam case, a Government agency which tracks corporate frauds has recommended a CBI probe against West Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra and Kolkata Police chief Surajit Kar Purkayastha.

The serious fraud investigation office (SFIO) which is an investigative arm of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, in its 516-page report, has asked CBI to 'take further action' on the allegations against Mitra who is a close confidante of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Purkayastha.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, the SFIO's report is based on depositions of suspended TMC Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh.

"While the evidence is not sufficient to frame any charge, however, since the CBI is looking into the larger conspiracy angle of the Saradha scam, it is recommended that the matter be referred to CBI for necessary investigation and further action at its end," a paragraph of the report was quoted in the report.

Ghosh who is presently in jail in connection with the scam has also submitted some photographs which show Mitra and Purakayasta at different Saradha group events.

Not only this, Saradha group chairman Sen, who is also behind the bars, has also claimed that he had gifted a Ferrari to Mitra's son and he, too, took money from him to repair temples in his constituency and to hold a football match, in which Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi took part.

Last year, the UPA Government ordered a multi-agency probe in the multi-crore Saradha scam. Since, then the investigating agencies have arrested several politicians, corporate bigwigs in connection with the case.
