Viral Facebook Post: Kerala woman shows the way; calls off wedding over dowry row

Kerala, Dec 8: For all brides, who are at the mercy of dowry seekers, Remya of Kerala has shown the way to contest the bygone patriarchy trend.

Remya, last week in a unique and unconventional route, declared that she wishes to draw back from getting into wedlock as fiancé's family demanded dowry. Remya availed the social media, Facebook to call off her wedding.

Fiancé's family soon after the engagement ceremony started demanding dowry. Miffed Remya, who hails from Thrissur, called off the wedding through Facebook.

In a Facebook post she said, "To all those asking for the date of my wedding, the family that before the engagement had said that they only wanted me, post the engagement, they were demanding 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakh rupees."

The post went viral.

Her post soon went viral on social media with numerous congratulatory messages praising her decision pouring in for her. "Perfect decision. Let this encourage other women too," one person wrote.

Follwing this Remya on Sunday, Dec 6 expressed gratitude for displaying solidarity.

"I just wanted to let my circle know about cancellation of marriage, never expected this to break. Meanwhile, I would like to explain that the decision was my declaration. Never had an intention to hurt anyone specifically. Please don't use my post for personalized humiliation, instead use it against our social norms. People are ignorant for their own convenience and profit. Thank you once again," she wrote.
