US issues advisory to citizens in TN following Jayalalithaa's health row

The US Consulate in Chennai has issued an advisory to all its citizens in Tamil Nadu following unrest over Jayalalithaa's health condition. The US Consulate has temporarily suspended appointments for routine services to its citizens and visa applications.

The consulate warned its citizens that 'gathering intended to be peaceful may turn confrontational and escalate into violence'. The advisory also asks citizens to 'avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution in of large gathering'. The advisory has been issued in view of the situation in Tamil Nadu following Jayalalithaa's health.
'Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal safety,' the US state department said.
The statement also said that US Consulate General in Chennai will operate with reduced staffing on December 5 and will provide updates when routine services are restored.
