Bangalore, May 7: The eighth and penultimate phase of the Lok Sabha 2014 is underway. A total of 64 constituencies went to the polls in this phase. The constituencies include 25 in Seemandhra, 15 in Uttar Pradesh, seven in Bihar, six in West Bengal, five in Uttarakhand, four in Himachal Pradesh and two in Jammu and Kashmir.

A total of 95.5 million electors were eligible to cast their ballot in this phase. A total of 897 candidates were in the fray, including 79 women.

7.15 pm: Narendra Modi gets permission for Varanasi rally.

7:00 pm: Uttarakhand registers 62% voter turnout, Bihar records 58% voter turnout. West Bengal records 82.14% turnout. Himachal Pradesh records 65% turnout. Jammu and Kashmir records 49.98%. Uttar Pradesh records 55.52% turnout.

6.04 pm: Polling closes in Seemandhara. Voter turnout was 74 per cent till 5 pm.

5.48 pm: One person killed in police firing outside booth in Bihar.

5.27 pm: Himachal Pradesh records 62.25 per cent voting, while Amethi records 49.96 voting till 5 pm.

5.18 pm: 80.51 per cent polling recorded in West Bengal till 5 pm.

5.05 pm: BJP's Smriti Irani said: "Rahul Gandhi's defeat will ensure Amethi's victory."

5.00 pm: Bihar records 50.39 per cent voting till 4 pm.

4.55 pm: Narendra Modi gets permission to hold two rallies in Varanasi. First one at Rohania and second at Beniabagh.

4.54 pm: Two Youth Congress workers caught handling money to voters.

4.45 pm: On asking Rahul Gandhi about Narendra Modi's presence in Amethi, Rahul said that 'Modi was a non-challenge in Amethi.'

7.51 am: AAP Amethi candidate Kumar Vishwas sounded confident and said that 'Amethi had made its choice. They have chosen the jhaadu. Amethi mein jhaadu chal gayi hai, he said. Vishwas even took a dig at Rahul Gandhi saying that 'you cannot bring a change by just waving at the crowd.'

7.15 am: Voting begins for 64 seats; all eyes on Amethi, Seemandhra.

Polling began at 7 am.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be challenged by BJP's Smriti Irani and Aam Aadmi Party's Kumar Vishwas in Amethi in this phase. Other heavyweight and celebrity candidates contesting in this phase are Varun Gandhi, Rabri Devi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Mohammad Kaif, Moon Moon Sen, Babul Supriyo and others.
