UP riots toll touches 28; 'fake' video filmed abroad, say police

Lucknow, Sept 9: The Uttar Pradesh government has changed several top police officers in the wake of the Muzaffarnagar riots that have killed 28 persons so far.

The government, facing flak from various quarters over its handling of the riots, has removed Inspector General (IG) of the Meerut range, Brijbhushan, and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Saharanpur DC Mishra. According to television news reports, Brijbhushan has been replaced with Bhavesh Singh while Ashok Mutha took over as the DIG of Saharanpur.

However, no fresh violence was reported in the area since Sunday night.

Uttar Pradesh ADG, law and order, Arun Kumar said 90 people have been arrested so far in connection to the riots.

Police officers were seeking cooperation from the village heads to spread awareness about the 'fake' video which is believed to be the reason for the violence. The video, which was downloaded from Youtube, is reportedly an old clip recorded in either Afghanistan or Pakistan. The video reportedly shows two men getting lynched by a Muslim mob.

IG, crime, Ashish Gupta appealed to the people not to get provoked by the video.
