UP elections 2017: 126 candidates have pending criminal cases

Phase 6 of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will witness 126 candidates with a criminal background and 160 crorepatis battling it out. Out of the 635 candidates analyzed, 126 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves says a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms.

109 candidates have declared serious criminal cases, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc. 9 candidates have declared cases related to murder.

23 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder. 2 candidates have declared cases like assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty. 1 candidate has declared case related to kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person.

Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases:

18(40%) out of 45 candidates from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 24 (49%) out of 49 candidates from Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP), 5 (14%) out of 36 candidates from Rashtriya Lok Dal(RLD), 15(38%) out of 40 candidates from Samajwadi Party ( SP),4(27%) out of 15 candidates from Communist party of India (CPI).3(30%) out of 10 candidates from Indian National Congress(INC), and 22(13%) out of 175 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases:

20(41%) out of 49 candidates from BSP, 16 (36%) out of 45 candidates from BJP, 5 (14%) out of 36 candidates from RLD, 12(30%) out of 40 candidates from SP, 3(20%) out of 15 candidates from CPI, 2 (20%) out of 10 candidates from INC and 21(12%) out of 175 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

There are 24(49%) out of 49 constituencies in the sixth phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections having 3 or more candidates with declared criminal cases.

Financial background:

Out of the 635 candidates, 160 (25%) are crorepatis. 35(71%) out of 49 candidates from BSP, 33(73%) out of 45 candidates from BJP, 28 (70%) out of 40 candidates from SP, 6(60%) out of 10 candidates from INC, 8(22%) out of 36 candidates from RLD and 23(13%) out of 175 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in the sixth phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections is Rs 1.59 Crores.

Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 10 INC candidates is Rs.1.84 crores, 45 BJP candidates is Rs 3.25 crores, 49 BSP candidates have average assets of Rs 8.98 crores, 40 SP candidates have average assets worth Rs 3.13 crores, 36 RLD candidates have average assets worth Rs 89.54 lakhs, and 175 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 68.49 lakhs.
