UP elections 2017: 117 candidates with criminal background in phase 5

There are 117 candidates with criminal cases pending against them in the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2017. A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms states that 19 per cent of the 612 candidates analysed have pending criminal cases against them. Out of the 117, there are 96 candidates who have declared serious criminal cases against them, the report also states.
9 candidates have declared cases related to murder while 24 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder. 8 candidates have declared cases like assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty. 4 candidates have declared cases related to kidnapping for ransom.
The BJP has fielded 21 candidates with pending criminal cases. The BSP, RLD and the SP have fielded 23, 8 and 17 such candidates respectively. There are 19 independent candidates who have pending criminal cases against them while in the case of the Congress it is 3.
There are 22 constituencies in the fifth phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections having 3 or more candidates with declared criminal cases. Red Alert Constituencies are those which have 3 or more candidates with criminal cases contesting elections.
