"The incident took place yesterday when a police team had gone to arrest one person in connection with a loot case. Locals started pelting stones at them, injuring six policemen," said Incharge Police Post Mukesh Malic, who was also part of the team.
24 persons have been booked under various sections of IPC in this connection while 9 of them have been identified, he said adding, no arrests have been made so far.
Reports of stone pelting at cops by angry mob has become quite frequent in Shamli and adjoining region.
Earlier on Oct 16, two security personnel were injured when villagers in Shamli allegedly opened fire and pelted stones at a police team which had gone to arrest 20 persons accused in Phugana gangrape cases during Muzaffarnagar riots, police said.
The incident took place in Phugana village on October 15, after the villagers opposed the arrest of 20 accused in the five gangrape cases which took place during the riots, Superintendent of Police Rural, Alok Piryadarshi said.
The irate mob pelted stones and opened fire at the police in which a policeman and a home guard were injured, the SP said.
A case was registered under various sections against one hundred people and 14 people were named for interfering in police action. After the incident yesterday, security has been tightened in the village, he added.
