United Nations
United Nations, Dec 14: In an end-of year report, Herve Ladsous, the chief of UN peacekeeping said that 90 of its peacekeepers were killed in 2013. Incidentally, 29 of them were victims of "deliberate attack". However, the most noteworthy was the loss at the Darfur region of Sudan where UN lost 14 of its peacekeepers, which Ladsous renders "unacceptable".

He further added that his department is gearing up for peace-keeping activities and stabilizing Syria if UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon requested. "We are waiting for the Geneva peace talks in Januray and then only a decision can be taken," he said. The talks would primarily deal with measures to end the fighting that has reportedly claimed the lives of 120,000 people in three years.

Hailing the Northern countries (as they disengage from the Afghanistan war), Ladsous welcomed any contribution in the peacekeeping.
