The principal of the Engineering college that the students were studying in said that no permission had been given to the students to go on the tour. "They have not taken our permission. They had told us that they would go on an industrial visit to Pune but no permission was not given. They said that they would make their own arrangements and go. I had strictly intructed them that if they had made up their mind to go, they should visit Pune alone and return. But they seem to have diverted from there and this incident has taken place," said Dr V Udipi, the Principal of the College. He also added that he was leaving to Maharashtra immediately with ambulances.

Eight students including three girls drowned while they had visited the Wairi beach in Sindhudurg district of neighbouring Maharashtra. The local police have registered a case and the bodies of the drowned students have been shifted to the local government hospital. Parents of the deceased students have been informed of the unfortunate incident.
