It was said that these bulbs are fitted with microchips and can track the movement and conversation of the person the moment he enters his home. The rumour that spread was that it was a government ploy to keep a tab on the people and that is why it is being sold so cheap.

The other rumour that did the rounds was about a mobile company. The rumour was that the company was distributing free sim cards which were equipped with tracking capabilities. This rumour started doing the rounds after two militants were killed and during the investigation, it was found that they were using sim cards of this particular company. Rumour spread and a boycott of the company was called for.

Apart from fighting infiltrators and local terrorists, security agencies have had to deal with rumour mongering as well. "These are sustained efforts by anti-nationals to create tension which is followed by violence. This is part of the agenda to keep the valley on the boil," an official pointed out.
