This Maharashtra village has no pitchers, but 'water wives'
Denganmal, June 5:The Denganmal village in western India has been badly affected by the drought and has no taps. The only source of survival for the people here are the two wells that are located at the foot of a nearby rocky hill, which is always crowded. Fetching water from the spot could be really tiresome, consuming a lot of time and energy.
However, the men in the village have found a 'simple' solution to this complicated problem. They marry multiple times to ensure that there is free flowing water in the household. Though polygamy is ikllegal in India, the men here do not hesitate in marrying again even though their wives are alive.
66 year old Bhagat reveals the plan of action. "I had to have someone to bring us water, and marrying again was the only option, " he said. He further explains,"My first wife was busy with the kids. When my second wife fell sick and was unable to fetch water, I married a third." Bhagat says the women, some of them widows or abandoned, are also happy with the arrangement.
Strangely, despite all his 3 wives living with him under the same roof, does not create trouble for him. Most of these water wives are either abandoned or widowed and are happy with the arrangement. We are like sisters. We help each other. Sometimes we might have problems, but we solve them among ourselves," his first wife, Tuki, said.
