Cross-border trafficking a concern for Assam: Gogoi Cross-border trafficking a concern for Assam: Gogoi Guwahati, Dec 6 (PTI) Cross-border trafficking was amajor concern for Assam which was on the rise as the NorthEast region shared borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal,Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said today. "This is a serious challenge for us and the Centrewas also concerned about it with continuous effort being madeto tackle the issue," Gogoi told the Trafficking in PersonsConclave 3 here. He said it was an obligation and duty to ensure thateverybody lived with dignity and that every child, woman andindividual enjoyed human rights which was the basic objectiveof the Constitution. There were several reasons for trafficking includingpoverty, lack of unemployment opportunities, migration, drugtrafficking, business and labour, he said. "Sometimes the victims are forced to be traffickedwhile there have been incidents of insurgents forcing childrento join them and in some cases they are being kidnapped," thechief minister said. Stating that in Assam, trafficking in women andchildren were more common, he said "This is a gross violationof human rights and I am eager to work with all concerned toaddress the issue." US Consul General, Kolkata, Helen Lafave said that theissues of trafficking spoke of the complexity, the need tocollaborate and work together across regions, provinces andnational boundaries. The Conclave organised by the US Consulate, Kolkataand Impulse NGO Network also discussed the Status of Adoptingand Implementing the UN Trafficking Protocol. PTI DG PCHKS
