Tapas Pal comment: Mamata targets media, says good things are not highlighted

Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata, July 4: Despite public anger at the Bengali film actor-turned politician-Tapas Pal, chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee accused the media of blowing the rape comment out of proportion with the aim to malign the TMC.

She further emphasized,"good work" was never publicised, small matters were getting highlighted. Now, as you can see, if you do some good work that is never publicised. But if somebody does something small, or even if somebody does not do it, everybody is out with a vengeance. A campaign of canard and misinformation is being carried out against us in a planted way. It may well be, that you don't even know what has happened."

She also said,"So, in such a scenario, you should keep in mind that we have to on our own arrange for ways and means to defend ourselves." Interestingly, she did not name the actor, clearly targetting the media.

A Lok Sabha member from Krishnanagar, Nadia, Tapas Pal was caught on camera hurling abuses at the opposition and saying that he would unleash his men on their women and get them raped. He also said that the leaders should be shot down or murdered by slitting throats.

The politician later issued an apology letter, terming his comments as "gross error of judgment" and "deeply insensitive".

The TMC said that the matter should have rested there, but the opposition is making unconditional demands of arrest and explusion from the assembly.
